HOW TO USE THE BOARD (note also the "Help" button at the top of the page)

1. HOW TO GET AROUND THE BOARD: At the top of each page you will find links written in blue text to the pages which preceded the one you are on. To return to a previous screen, just click on the link to that page.

2. HOW TO READ POSTS: There are two ways to find the posts which you may be interested in reading:

a. Click on the forum which most interests you. Once there, click on the subject of the post that you want to read, or one of the three other tabs to refine your request; or

b. Click on the “Selected” “Popular” or “Recent” tab and you will be brought to a list of topics based on your choice.
3. HOW TO POST
a. Select the forum which is most appropriate for your post.

b. Click on the forum name.

c. Click on the “New Topic” button on the right side of the page.

d. Enter the subject of your post and optionally a description line.

e. Type your post in the text window.  BREAK UP YOUR POST INTO SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE PARAGRAPHS.  Some of our members are not able to read long paragraphs.

f. If you are attaching a file, attach it using the text window below the post text window. Make sure that your file has one of the allowed suffixes which include bmp gif, jpg, jpeg, png, txt, zip, and pdf.  Please use this feature sparingly only to attach medical files (i.e., to attach an article). Moderators may delete attachments if they are not viewed often. Max. size is 20K.

g. The Board software allows for colored texts and different fonts. This feature is supported by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. You will not be able to change fonts using Netscape. Please do not change font characteristics except to emphasize a brief passage.  To change font color or size:
1. Place the cursor at the top left of the text window.

2. Then select the desired font size and color and begin typing. If you do anything else before you start typing, you will lose the next font settings.

3. Alternatively, you can type the message in normal font size and color and then highlight the part of the text and select the desired font size and color.
h. Please keep in mind that some of our members have vision problems which make certain text attributes difficult to impossible to read. To ensure that all of our members will be able to read your posts, please consider the following :
1. Lighter colors, such as yellow, are difficult or even impossible for some members to read. Use darker colors (black, gray, navy, blue, dark red, red, and green).

2. Instead of using all capital letters because of difficulty using the shift key, please consider typing in all lower case letters as some of our members have difficulty reading all capital letters.

3. Please break your posts up into relatively small paragraphs for easier readability.
4. HOW TO REPLY: To reply to a post:
a. Click on the “Reply” button at the top write of the message box.

b. Type your message

c. Click on the “Send” button
5. HOW TO SEND PRIVATE MESSAGES: You can send Private Messages to other Board members. These messages are received on the Board but in a private area which cannot be read by other members. To send a private message:
a. Click on the recipient’s screen name.

b. Select “Send A Private Message”.  (Alternatively, go to the Private Message section and click "Write New".  Then type in the screen name of the person to whom you would like to write.)

c. To send or forward messages to more than one person, insert a comma between screen names.  You do not need to include a space between the comma and the next name but it will work if you do.

Since this feature is not at all forgiving (meaning that if you misspell a screen name, you will lose the text of the message when you click "Send"), it is a good idea to copy your message to your clipboard before clicking "Send" in case you have made an error and need to start again.

d. Fill in the subject line

e. Type your message

f. Click "Send" at the bottom of the page.

g. The recipient will receive e-mail notification that a message is waiting for them.
6. HOW TO ACCESS PRIVATE MESSAGES: You will know that a Private
Message is waiting for you in one of two ways:
a. You will receive e-mail notification with a link to your Private Message box; clicking on the link in the message will bring you to your Private Message Box; and

b. In the top right corner, there is a message number indicator next to your login name; clicking on this link will bring you to your Private Message Box.

c. To open a Private Message, wait until the page has completely finished loading and then click on the subject line. The text message will appear below the subject line.

d. To close a Private Message, click on the subject line.
7. HOW TO SEND E-MAIL TO A MEMBER:
a. Click on the screen name of the person to whom you want to send an email message.

b. Select the “Send e-mail” option.

c. Your e-mail client software will be opened to a new message with the email address of the recipient in the “To” field.

d. Some members have chosen not to make their e -mail addresses available to other members. To communicate with them privately, send a Private Message.
8. HOW TO USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION:
a. Enter the key words for your search in the search text window to the right of the “Search” button. To get a list of posts by a specific user, check the "Search by username" box.

b. Either hit the enter key on your keyboard or click the “Search” button.

c. You will be given a list of posts which contain those words.

d. Click on the subject to be taken to that post.

e. To return to the search results list, use the “back” button on your browser.
9. AVATARS: Avatars are the little pictures that appear under each member’s screen name. You can use them to make a statement or give other members some insight into your personality.

There are a few avatars already loaded onto the Board which you can add to your account as follows:
a.  Click on the “My Account” button at the top of the page

b.  Cick on the “Avatar” tab.

c.  Slect the avatar you want to use.
There are also numerous web sites which offer free avatars for download to your computer but beware as many of them also download spyware.

Once you have downloaded the avatar to your computer, you can then upload it to your MarshallProtocol.com account. Follow the same procedure as outlined above but instead of selecting one of the existing avatars, click “browse” and elect the file which you downloaded to your computer.

10. HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR PROFILE:
a. Click on the "My account" button at the top of the page.

b. Click on the "Profile" tab

c. Fill out your information, as much as you are comfortable sharing.

d. Click "Save"

e. Click the "Home" button at the top of the page to return to the board.

11. MEMBER DEMOGRAPHICS: To find other members who live near you:
a. Click on your screen name and select “View Profile”

b. Click on the information in the “Location” field. If you click on the city, you will get a list of people who live in that city. If you click on the state, you will get a list of people who live in that state. If you click on country, you will get a list of people who live in that country.

Once again, thanks Suz for your enormous help in explaining important details on how to use this board successfully from the start!

If left up to me - I would mainly leave them all to figure it out themselves, or if asked for more specific info I might have said:
  • See pretty buttons?  Push them.
  • See what they do?  Fun?  Push them some more.
  • Don't like what they do?  Don't push them anymore.
  • Play nice.
I'm gonna be a GREAT administrator!  I'm PUMPED for this challenge!

Seriously, though, thank you to Suzanne for sharing your experience with us.

A few more words about fonts, colors, & sizes:

I personally am not bothered by different fonts, but I can understand how those with vision problems might be.  Most fonts offered on this Board are fairly easy to read, but some fonts like "Impact" are too scrunchy to read well and quite frankly are just annoying.

As for color - I totally agree with Suzanne about that and plead with you to resist the urge to use something agitating like aqua.  Perhaps nice for bathroom wallpaper, but NOT emails or Bulletin Board posts.

NOW for a PLEASE DO...I think the default font size is "2".  For those of us who might be getting older and are beginining to have to squint when reading smaller print, yet we are still in total denial about that -- please be so kind as to bump the font up to 3 if you don't mind.

Squinting gives me such a headache - so THANKS!

Now go push a lot of pretty buttons, upgrade those font sizes & HAVE FUN!

DR

If you come across a post that you are having trouble reading due to font size, you can adjust for this using your browser.

If you are using Internet Explorer: View > Text Size > [then select one of the larger text sizes]

If you are using Firefox, View > Increase

Alternatively, you could ... put on your glasses...

Re: Font Size....well, I be "ding donged!"  Who knew?

Suzanne how do you know all?  Do you see & hear all as well cuz I'm starting to get a bit frightened!

Thanks for that tip that will no doubt, keep on giving!

FYI - I'm about to start a NEW POST that asks about "Mana" and something else too (can't remember what the @#$% it was gonna be) BUT it would be swell if you would be "sitting on ready" to answer thoroughly.

xoxox,

I just sent you an email about how to change the default font size for the board so people won't have to change the font for each message.

I also just remembered that there is another change that needs to be made in order to use browser settings to change font size.  I'll send that to you by email.

Suz - I tried to make the adjustment as per your instructions --- but NADA.

Thanks for trying to help.

I shall now take my first morning nap, and then get back to it shortly and see if my "fresh eyes" can better understand it.

Until then, I ask that some of you think about us poor vision folks!
