Hey, I'm sorry, but I ain't givin up my mokies. I swear I think the chemicals in the cigs may have kept me alive and kicking. I sure have not been able to do anything that takes much more effort.
Hey, can anyone tell me how to permanently set my color and font and such? I have to redo it every time!!! God forbid anyone makes MORE work for a lymey.

Now look, woman - if I can quit smoking, so can ANYONE!
I do realize how difficult it is to quit, and that you won't quit permanently until you are ready. But I am very glad that I did. It's a HUGE RELIEF to not depend upon them and getting that nicotine "need" met all the time.
Actually what I heard from a pain mgmt doc (who was actually more of a pain in my ass than anything) - but he said that people who smoke have to take MORE pain medication because of the chemicals in cigs. Don't ask me why. I'm sure I knew at one point....but memory is gone...
As far as when or HOW I finally quit after about 50 attempts - I also have no idea -- no kidding. I used to make a big deal about declaring the date that I'd quit, tapering down, telling all my friends/family, practically throwing a parade for myself BEFORE I quit.
None of those attempts really "took" for very long...most of them didn't work longer than 1/2 day!
What finally worked is when I became the full-time caregiver for my Godmother who was dying from COPD (emphysema). I can't tell you WHEN....I think I had been trying EVERY DAY and I just kept getting pisssed off at myself for not having the will power to quit when my Godmother, an 81 year old woman who had smoked for 30 years, but had NOT SMOKED since she was in her late 30's herself, was dying inside my home.
I think finally one day I thought: I'm not going to smoke....today. And I didn't.
And then I said that the next day and so on...until I no longer had to make that decision, and it was just automatic.
Having said all that - I hope you don't think I'm casting judgment on anyone that smokes now...I know how hard it is. It felt impossible at times - especially when I was feeling so miserable and it felt like my only "vice" or my only 'enjoyment' that I allowed myself during all my horrifying days & nights of pain & illness, blah blah blah.
Now my 'vice' and enjoyment is far too many nights of a soda & movie-theatre-buttered-microwave-popcorn. I now call them household "staples" much like bread & milk - only more necessary. And now....I'm really kinda fat. Ok, not just *kinda*...but my lungs are cleaner!
Hugs,
Donna

| Ok, you said so yourself...she hadn't smoked in 30 years and got the crap anyway!! I certainly don't intend to live until I'm 80. In fact, I'm ready NOW. I'm not even trying to quit smoking. I LOVE my cigs. I just hate the world that won't let me smoke anywhere any more! ha

Eve -
I totally understand about the smoking thing. There have been occassions in the past where I couldn't understand WHY someone couldn't invent a cig that was GOOD for you!
I keep thinking there's got to be some kind of herb combination that would not only taste good & smoke good, but would also be good FOR you! Now wouldn't THAT be great? Only problem is, knowing our gov't & their LOVE of bureaucrats & BIG MONEY - those ciggies would probably be outlawed because it would take the FDA 20+ years or more to approve of them - especially if some of the billionaires of the tobacco industry weren't behind the new improved healthy ciggy.
Yep...call me cynical.
But don't worry Eve (hey, you don't smoke the cigs called 'Eve'do you? I always thought they were too skinny - had to suck too hard....) I won't give you a hard time about quitting smoking. It's an individual decision & you MUST be ready, otherwise you're just adding extra stress to your life by going through the motions, only to add some self-loating to your plate when you fail at quitting, and decide to engage in a bit of a mental self-beating.
But I WILL do my best to be here for you & anyone else if you do decide to quit - because I know it's not particularly easy, particularly because smoking IS so very glamarous! hahaha

Although in truth, I must admit that quitting for good this last time was so much easier for me when I just decided to quit one day at a time (you know, like an alcoholic)
AND because I started to feel so bad that going to the store just wore me out, & simply just chose not to buy them anymore...which obviously helps since I'm not generally a thief. FYI - I also had to stop hanging around my best friend who smokes like a freight train, because it kept the desire alive, and I would bum one cig after another - which is NOT the same as being a ciggy theif!
I can go back around my friend now, after about 3 years -- and handle it. Matter of fact, the smell makes me nauseous & dizzy. First time I was ever glad to be sick & dizzy! ha!
Hugs to all,
Donna
